I stuck around Ventura and continued to acquire books, my obsessive hobby. A few short trips which were un-memorable. I did try my hand at trap shooting and managed to blow away a few clay pigeons, we used to shoot doves south of Tucson when at the U of A. John Baker and the armed fraternity brothers did a great job in the bush. The attached photo if of my son and I. He is the one on the left in the photo, he beat me in the quantity of clay pigeons killed.

I did make a trip to Las Cruces, NM to see a long time friend and got a bad case of heartburn eating the fire hot green chile they grow there. Went to Death Valley and found it a great place to visit, as it is quiet, few people, and picturesque. I recommend it for those of you who might want to escape from the crowds, traffic, and an opportunity to view the stars in the sky.

Dear Brothers,

I am writing you because I need your help.

I am trying to spread the word about Cancer Hope Network and the work they do to support people (and the family of those) diagnosed with Cancer. I am passionate about helping people and will even be competing in the 320 mile Ultraman World Championships in a couple weeks and trying to raise awareness for the cause in doing so.

There is a lot you can do to help that WON’T COST YOU A PENNY… Will you help me?

Share a video I made to raise awareness for the cause – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pNQrFqTGQc

Become a fan of our team on Facebook – http://www.facebook.com/Season1Racing

Post to your wall or suggest that others become a fan too.

Post a link to our fundraising on your facebook, twitter account, or email – http://www.firstgiving.com/season1racing

Follow Season 1 Racing on twitter – @season1racing

I will be racing in the Ultraman World Championships from November 25-27th to help raise awareness both for Season 1 Racing and Cancer Hope Network. If you want to track me during the race, you can at http://www.ultramanlive.com/ . I will also be updating my blog on http://www.season1racing.com/

Our ultimate goal is to raise money and awareness, so the more people that are aware of our efforts, the better chance we will have to truly make a difference.

Thanks,
Rusty

In today’s job market, it is not enough to be just smart and talented. Kappa Sigma alumni at the University of Arizona recognize the importance of powerful networks to prepare students for post graduate success. Towards that end, we are implementing a Career and Leadership Program that will be valuable and unique for both undergraduate members and alumni. The program will offer an additional resource allowing current members to access advice and a possible career path while still in school. For alumni, this represents an opportunity to help at the chapter level but to also identify capable young men who might one day be an asset to your own organization. We will offer guidance and mentoring along with internship opportunities with companies big and small where students will be offered the opportunity to grow and development while still in school. We encourage you to participate with your own offers of leadership, help, mentoring and internship. For additional information please call Duke Schwartz at 602-684-4136 or email at ads3@cox.net.

Jim Negri ’46 was one of the finest all around athletes to come out of Douglas High School. When he graduated, he came to Arizona on a football scholarship. He was good in every major or minor sport he participated in. Negri went into the service during World War II. Up until a year or so before he died he was still a solid and fiercely competitive golfer. He was a genuinely good all around man.
-Earl Pottinger ’48

Jim Pickrell ’46 was an all state center on the undefeated Tucson High School football team. He was also a sculptor, humorous and a highly respected large animal veterinarian. We attended his recent funeral in Canelo, near Sonoita, which attracted about 400 ranch people from all over Santa Cruz and Pima Counties. In the 1940′s, while attending the University of Arizona, due to his good looks and outstanding personality he was selected “Most Eligible Bachelor” representing the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
-Earl Pottinger ’48

Skip Kent ’57 passed away Sept. 29, 2011 in Sparta,Ga. He was a gung ho KE at the U of A. He was initiated in 1957 and made his mark for the fraternity as Rush Chairman in the fall of 1958. With his guidance the fraternity brought in over 50 new initiates as pledges of KE located at 1325 E. Speedway. It was a large pledge class for its time as well as a quality group of men. Many of the ’58 pledges have returned for Homecoming as late as last year. Why? It was the enthusiasm projected by Skip way back in August 1958. Skip spent most of his early years in Tucson and was a proud graduate of Tucson High School. He’s survived by his loving wife Jessie as well as sister in law and two nieces. Skip was a die hard supporter of Wildcat sports and will continue to root for them no matter where he is. His passing is a great loss to all who knew him. Although gone he will never be forgotten. God bless you Skippy.
-Tom Houghton ’59

John “Scooter” Mattison ’66 earned the nickname “Scooter” for his speed running the bases. In 1970, he met Cecilie Cobb at the Rincon Market in Tucson. They were married in 1972. Scooter loved skiing in the Wasatch, spending time at the family cabin and fishing with his buddies. A part of him will be always be at Alta, Fish Lake and Lake Powell with the people whom he shared those memories. Living up to his nickname, Scooter actively participated in sports and coached much of his life. He was proud to be a Kappa Sigma and cherished this band of brothers. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in July 2010. During this 14-month battle with the disease, he was full of gratitude and humbled by the outpouring of love and support of his friends old and new, near and far. He passed October 10th. His spirit will always live on in our hearts and memories. He will be fully and truly missed.

Brothers,

We have good news. Taylor Heidenheim, Matt Noble and Steve Russell met with the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Programs (Johanne Jenson) and former Dean of Students (Carol Thompson), and we have a tentative agreement to allow Gamma-Rho to come back to campus one semester early (Fall of 2012 vs. Spring 2013). We have a few things to resolve first: a meeting with our local advisors and UA staff and our advisors need to develop the materials required by Kappa Sigma national and the UA (due by the end of December). We will submit our formal request in-person during the spring to IFC.

We plan to be the #1 fraternity at UA as quickly as possible. Our focus will be to find members who want to return Gamma-Rho to excellence. We plan to merge what we all know as Gamma-Rho with a more formalized career internship and leadership development program. We will be looking for members who will be committed to the following (and hold members accountable for not meeting standards):

BE A GOOD STUDENT – I will attend classes and set a goal of attaining no less than 3.00 GPA.

BE INVOLVED IN THE CHAPTER – I will participate in at least one chapter committee annually and strive to serve in a chapter leadership position by the time I graduate. I will attend at least one Kappa Sigma Leadership Conference by the time I graduate. I will also commit to not missing more than one meeting per month.

BE INVOLVED ON CAMPUS – I will participate in no less than one campus organization annually and strive to serve in a leadership position in at least one of these organizations by the time I graduate.

BE INVOLVED IN ATHLETICS – I will participate in at least one intramural sport annually.

BE COMMITTED TO COMMUNITY SERVICE – I will participate in at least one chapter service project per semester, provide no less than 10 hours of community service per semester, and contribute at least $25 annually to charity.

BE A SOCIAL MEMBER – I will participate in most chapter social programs, such as: Date Dashes, Dinner Exchanges, Formal, Family Weekend, Homecoming Weekend, parties with other Fraternities/Sororities, etc. I will also, make it a point to be by the Chapter House at least once per week.

BE COMMITTED TO CHAPTER HISTORY AND RITUAL – As a pledge, I commit to learning Kappa Sigma International and Local Chapter history. As an active, I commit to be ritually proficient at no less than the GMC level.

BE RESPECTFUL TO EVERYONE – As a pledge, I commit to getting to know my pledge brothers, as well as active members of the chapter. As an active, I commit to treating pledges and actives with respect, and to getting to know alumni brothers. I will always be my “Brothers Keeper.” I will also be respectful to every guest at our Chapter House or at any off-site function.

BE DEDICATED TO MAINTAINING A NON-HAZING ENVIRONMENT – As a pledge, I will not allow myself to be hazed. As an active, I agree I will never participate or tolerate hazing by others on pledges.

BE DEDICATED TO FOLLOW RISK MANAGEMENT POLICIES – I will follow Fraternity and University policies regarding drugs and alcohol, and I realize that I will be suspended or expelled for not following these policies.

BE COMMITTED TO RESPECTING OUR FACILITY – Every day, I will do my share to keep the house clean and maintained. If I cause any damage or throw glass on the property, I can expect to be suspended or expelled. As a pledge, I will participate in at least one clean-up per week. As an active/pledge, I will clean my assigned area of the house for the week assigned.

BE RESPONSIBLE FOR RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS – I will strive to recruit at least one new member per year and I will attend all Rush functions.

BE FOCUSED ON STRONG CAMPUS RELATIONS – I will understand that how I act in public is how others view the chapter. As such, I will act responsibly in my classes, resident halls, organizations, when I am out socially, etc.

BE CURRENT FINANCIALLY – I will always pay my bills in-full at the beginning of each semester, or sign a payment plan to pay off my bills by the end of each semester. I understand that if I am more than 60 days delinquent, I will be filed to a collection agency and IMH to be expelled.

LEAVE THE CHAPTER IN BETTER SHAPE THAN WHEN I LEFT IT – I will do whatever it takes to make Gamma-Rho Chapter a better fraternity than when I joined it.

REMEMBER IT IS A LIFETIME COMMITTMENT – I will remain committed to the long-term success of Gamma-Rho Chapter and Kappa Sigma as an alumnus, by: volunteering for Kappa Sigma either here at U of A or in the community I live, contributing a gift annually to the chapter and Kappa Sigma within my personal circumstances, and by attending U of A Homecoming at least every three years

So far, here are the brothers who have stepped up to serve as a volunteer.

We still are looking for Asst. Advisors willing to help oversee Academics/Scholarship, Greater Cause (Philanthropy & Service), and Membership Development/Pledge Education.

So, how can you help?

1. Send us Recruitment Recommendations. Although we do not return to campus for one year, we would like recommendations for those coming this year to see if we can convince them to hold off on joining another chapter and wait for our return. They will be part of our initial interest group. Of course, we want recommendations for those coming to UA in the fall of 2012, as well.

2. Have those interested in finding out more about Kappa Sigma fill out theRush Interest Form.

3. Help us host a Recruitment/Rush Reception in your city. We have heard from a few alumni already. Please contact Matt Noble atmatt.noble@fmgtucson.com, or 520-990-3250 if interested.

4. For those living in Tucson and Phoenix willing to serve on our Advisory Board, please contact Matt Noble at at matt.noble@fmgtucson.com, or 520-990-3250.

5. Make a contribution to The Century Club. (have that link to a page with the letter we used for the AF mailing we did last week. Include signatories and donor list. Add in a line about “You can donate online via Paypal HERE (link http://www.uakappasigma.org/donate-online/) or if you wish to make a credit card gift by other means, please contact Craig Lowden at craig.lowden@fmgtucson.com
